Let's start with my Best Dressed Noms, I have to start with my favorite actress Audrey Hepburn. She won her second Oscar in 1954 for Best Actress for her role as Princess Ann in Roman Holiday. Designed by famed costume designer Edith Head, her gown was an adaptation of a the gown she wore in the final scene of the film. Known as her "lucky dress", the down features all over ivory lace and a small matching lace belt. It is quintessentially Audrey; chic, timeless, and elegant.
Now, let's fast forward a few decades. My next Best Dressed Nominee won her first Oscar for her role as Viola De Lesseps. Gwyneth Paltrow made her first Red Carpet mark in 1999 with this lovely light pink Ralph Lauren gown. This silk taffeta number looks stunning on her beautiful frame.
Next up, is Ms. Julia Roberts. 2001 was a big year for her at the Oscars. Not only did she win a best actress award for her role as Erin Brokovich, but she was crowned with one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in Oscar history but she also topped all the best dressed lists. With her glowing smile, contagious laugh, and Vintage Valentino gown. Julia definitely stole the show.
I've chosen my next Best Dressed lady for a dress from Oscars past as well as the one of a kind Versace she wore on Sunday night. In my eyes Halle Berry almost never misses the mark when it comes to her Red Carpet style. Her first look is from 2002 when she won her iconic award for best actress in a leading role (The first woman of color to do so). Her Ellie Saab couture gown featured a sheer bodice with a floral motif along with a full tulle skirt. Her custom Versace gown from the 85th Oscar Awards was one of the most stunning this year. It was perfect for a former Bond girl and should off Halle's flawless figure.
My last Best Dressed nominee goes to Hilary Swank. In 2005, she shocked us all with her back baring Guy Laroche down. After debuting her gown at the Oscars, Swank explained how she picked the gown. Originally the gown did not have sleeves and she thought she might get cold. But not wanting to be too covered and risk ending up on a worst dressed list Swank asked sleeves to be added and the have the back cut out. I think she looks classic, lady-like, and completely stunning in this dress.
So now we move on to the fun part. The "What were they thinking?" moments. Here are my Worst Dressed nominees.
Who can forget the Bjork and her notorious Swan Dress. Designed by Marjan Pejoski, this dress has since been hailed as one of the worst dresses seen at the Oscars EVER. I agree wholeheartedly. This dress is clearly a WTF moment. Oh and let's not forget the matching bag that came in the shape of goose egg.
The saying goes "Hell hath no furry like a woman scorned". Well in this case a woman scorned needs to think before she dresses. After discovering her then boyfriend, Jack Nicholson, had an affair with a ballet dancer Lara Flynn Boyle pulled out this not so stylish little number. Apparently, Ms. Boyle missed the memo that looking your best is the best revenge against an ex. Either way this ballet-inspired dress is an absolute hot mess.
The menswear trend has been popular for the past few season but there is certainly a right and wrong way to rock this trend. I have to say that this outfit goes beyond wrong. It is just awful. Dianne Lane has worn some beautiful outfits on the Red Carpet, but this was a huge mistake. Ms. Lane debuted this unflattering number at the 2004 Oscars when she was nominated for her role in Somethings Gotta Give. As Joan Rivers would put it she is a fashole. She reminds me of when I used to play dress-up and put on my Dad's old clothes. I understand that she was attempting to look androgynous, but this look just screams Charlie Chaplin to me. Thankfully Dianne has redeemed herself in years since this unfortunate style gaffe. For anyone attempting this menswear inspired look remember that tailoring is key and that you should probably just leave the bowler hat at home.
Last and certainly least is Lizzy Gardiner. In 1995 she won her first Oscar for Best Costume Design. But it wasn't her award that made her stand out. She arrived on the Red Carpet wearing a dress she made herself that was completely constructed of 254 gold American Express cards. I don't even know where to start with this dress. It is all just so completely wrong. I'm sure she was trying to make some sort of political statement but can we please save political statements for picket signs and bumper stickers. The problem with making dresses out of "everyday" objects is that they are never flattering. This dress has absolutely no shape. The only upside of this dress is that it raised $12,000 for AIDS research.
So that's my wrap up for this week. Tomorrow I promise to blog about my best and worst dressed of the Oscars this year.
Until next time, Stay stylish,
Lena B
